Lenten Creamed Tuna Over Toast

(Apologies for the silence over the last week. Half term with limited childcare, a husband out of town, and house guests didn’t leave me much time to blog! So don’t mind me as I try to catch up a bit this weekend!)

Creamed tuna over toast is a meal that my mom would often make on Fridays during lent. It is meant to be a very simple, meat-free meal, but it is actually surprisingly tasty! Not tasty like a lasagne, but certainly tastier than it looks! It also takes all of ten minutes to make with items from your pantry, which is nice.

  • 1 can of tuna
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 240ml (1 cup) milk
  • 75 grams (1/2 cup) frozen peas
  • optional: hard boiled eggs

melt the butter in a pot

slowly add in the flour, mixing it well with the butter with a fork or whisk until it looks similar to the picture below

slowly whisk in the milk

stir in the tuna

mix in frozen peas

salt and pepper to taste

If you wanted to dress this up a bit, you could add some cheese to the top and broil it in the oven. It detracts a bit from the intentional simplicity of the meal, but would sure taste yummy!

I’ve just come across your website as I love finding new recipes. But I wanted to say that fish isn’t vegetarian! Vegetarianism involves no meat or fish. Veganism cuts out dairy, eggs and another animal products too. If you eat fish, you are NOT a vegetarian. Check the vegatarian society definitions.

Hi Caroline! Yes. Sorry. I’m was being lazy about vegetarianism vs pescatarianism. I’ve changed the text above from “vegetarian” to read “meat-free” instead. Thanks for pointing it out! x
