Mac & Cheese Hungerpot

As soon as I started making wonderpots, I knew I needed to find a mac & cheese recipe, but everything I came across wasn’t quite what I was looking for. After reading loads of different recipes, I came up this version and am thrilled to say that it was a delicious success! There are a few small extra steps (one of which is optional . . . ) that might technically disqualify this as a wonderpot, but I won’t tell if you won’t. 😉


Mac & Cheese Hungerpot

  • 500g (4-5 cups) macaroni noodles
  • 500ml water
  • 500ml whole milk
  • half an onion, grated
  • 1-2 cups of chopped broccoli (cauliflower blends in nicely with the pasta if you have a vegephobe on your hands)
  • 1 bullion cube
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1.5 teaspoons mustard powder
  • 180g (2 cups) of grated cheese (cheddar, gruyere, swiss, monterey jack, etc.)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • garnish: panko-style bread crumbs or crumbled bacon



pour all ingredients, MINUS the cheese and garnishes, into the pot over a medium heat


stir constantly until the macaroni is al dente. (Add more milk if necessary to cook the pasta.) The mixture should be very creamy like the picture below before you add the cheese


stir in the cheese


salt and pepper to taste


if using breadcrumbs, pour over the top of the pasta, and broil in the oven until the top has browned. (You could also swap out more cheese for the breadcrumbs for a nice toasty/cheesy crust.)


For a nice and mild mac & cheese, monterey jack is a good choice. A sharp cheddar mixed with some gruyere (or any easy-melting cheese of your choice) would be more flavourful. I would love to know what you try!

    I have never made mac cheese, can you believe it…..
